The Irish built several canals across their country just in time for them to be made obsolete by the invention of the railway. Here's one of them, the Royal Canal, going all the way from the river Liffey in Dublin to River Shannon that meets the Atlantic on the Irish west coast, in Limerick. It's great for walking along without getting lost.
