This is likely to be your first view of Easter Island upon leaving the airport building. There are no large hotels on the island, that is simply not allowed. Instead, lots of people rent out a room in their house or in a building in their garden. And when the daily plane from Santiago arrives, those who have bookings go to the airport and pick up their guests in the traditional Polynesian way; with a lei (a flower necklace) and silly sunglasses.

There's no need to book ahead. The beds available far outnumber the seats on the only plane that brings visitors to the island. And you don't need to take a taxi either. In some airports you have to walk further to get your luggage than you have to walk here to get to the town centre.
