Et bra sted å dra til så snart man har kommet til Tasmania er Launceston. Da har du mange fine steder innen rekkevidde, og byen er i seg selv også innbydende. Massevis av gamle småhus med victorianske detaljer.

Mye av det du ser på Tasmania er mye eldre enn det aller meste inne på fastlandet. Tasmania er den delen av Australia som ligner mest på England, så for å gjøre det enkelt for seg var det her britene var mest intense i koloniseringen sin til å begynne med.

 

Launceston is a sensible place to move on to after having reached Tasmania. Lots of great destinations are within striking distance, and the town itself is quite a beauty, in sharp contrast to Devonport on the coast. There are lots of small houses like these, richly endowed with Victorian details.

Much of what you see in Tasmania is much older than most European-founded communities on the mainland. Tasmania is the part of Australia that looks and behaves most like England, so this is where the British were most interested in getting settled in the beginning. I suppose it stayed that way until someone invented efficient protection against sunburn.
