Kimberley rests right at the edge of this Big Hole. It used to be a diamond mine, dug out by hand. Three tons of diamons came out of that hole, creating the basis for the De Beers monopoly on the commodity. It's just crazy what people are willing to pay for the sparkly things of little use.

A lot of impressive numbers are on display at the museum here. None of them tell us how many people died down there. Oh, and the museum was paid for by the De Beers company.

 

Byen Kimberley ligger på kanten av en nedlagt diamantgruve, som nå bare er et stort hull i bakken, fullt av vann. Ut herfra kom det tre tonn diamanter, grunnlaget for De Beers-konsernets monopol på akkurat den varen. Det er utrolig hva folk er villige til å betale for en funklende liten stein.

Mange imponerende tall er slått opp på museumsveggen. Ingen sier noe om hvor mange som døde her. Museet ble forresten opprettet av De Beers-konsernet.
